<image:title>Teams - Kenya - Our Project</image:title>
<image:caption>The Kenya Team’s project began in 2013 after Princeton Swahili Professor Mahiri Mwita approached the Princeton student chapter about launching a program in his hometown in the Kuria district of Nyanza Province, Southwest Kenya. At the time, many families and students in the area had limited access to potable water and often relied on shared sources used by both people and livestock, contributing to unsanitary conditions and frequent typhoid outbreaks. Since then, the team has worked alongside local schools, organizations, and community members to improve access to clean drinking water through sustainable and community-centered engineering projects.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teams - Kenya - Current Progress</image:title>
<image:caption>Over the years, the team has implemented rain catchment systems in primary schools and community spaces, as well as solar-powered boreholes in both Kiburanga and Kubweye primary schools. Most recently, the team has been focused on constructing a large-scale water distribution system in Nyabohanse to serve both the surrounding community and Rev. David Duveskog Primary School, benefiting over 1,200 students and 500 households. As of now, the pipeline system has been installed and the 150m³ water tank is standing and filled with water, bringing the project close to becoming fully operational. In partnership with MIWASCO, the Lake Region Development Program, and Rev. David Duveskog Primary School, the team continues to support sustainable water access and promote safe water practices through education and community collaboration.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teams - Kenya - Where We’re Headed</image:title>
<image:caption>This summer, the team plans to return to the Kuria district to monitor and evaluate the newly completed water distribution system and ensure that it is operating effectively for the surrounding community. The trip will allow the team to assess the long-term functionality and sustainability of the infrastructure while continuing to strengthen partnerships with local organizations and community members. Looking ahead, the Kenya Team hopes to build on the success of the Nyabohanse project by identifying additional opportunities to improve water access and community resources throughout the region.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teams - Ecuador - Our Project</image:title>
<image:caption>Our Ecuador team is working to provide a safe, sustainable, and reliable water system in Rosario Vainas, a small village of 550 people located about 117 miles (app. 3.5-hour drive) from Quito, the capital of Ecuador. The existing water distribution system consists of water tank trucks that provide insufficient amounts of untreated water. Community members report significantly varied weather patterns making them over-dependent on the water tank trucks. Additionally, water-borne illnesses are commonplace in the community due to the inaccessibility of portable water. The end goal of the project is to design and implement a water system for the community of Rosario Vainas in Manabí, Ecuador that provides potable water for ~180 households.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We have successfully completed the remote implementation over the summer and received positive water quality test results! While we had hoped to install a water pump, the project was closed a bit earlier than expected. Our official involvement with the project is done, but the EWB in-country office will still be working with the community to find alternative funding sources. NGO partners and REIC members will be traveling to Ecuador soon to follow up and monitor progress.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teams - Ecuador - Our Project History</image:title>
<image:caption>In the summer of 2022, the travel team conducted the assessment phase of a potable water system project. The team consisted of seven undergraduate students, one engineer representative from EWB, and an in-country translator, driver, and a representative from the NGO, Fundación Redes Solidarias. In order to design a water system, the travel team collected data on the existing water sources in the community to determine the continuity of the underground aquifer and contamination levels from agricultural surface runoff. Additionally, community members were surveyed to understand water and electricity access and usage, climate trends in the area, and receive community input on project design. As a result of the work in Rosario Vainas, team Ecuador obtained the requisite geological, geographic, and demographic data to design a well for the community. Additionally, the team formed essential relationships with community members and a local NGO that built trust and stability in undertaking the project.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Peru Team is working with the community of Carnichique, Peru, to improve irrigation access for local farmers in the Sequoia Calaveras group. The project supports a rural farming community that relies on shared water access during dry months, when low flow and water loss can make crop irrigation difficult. Over the past several years, our team has helped develop a gravity-fed irrigation system that moves water more efficiently from the source to community fields. Through collaboration with local leaders, our NGO partner Julio Avalos, EWB-USA mentors, and community members, the project has focused on practical, community-centered infrastructure that can be built, maintained, and used locally.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teams - Peru - Current Progress</image:title>
<image:caption>The Carnichique project has made major progress. In the summer of 2024, the team completed a 1.4 km gravity-fed PVC pipeline system, replacing parts of the older dirt canal system that lost water through absorption. The system includes distribution boxes, valves for field-level control, and concrete support columns in vulnerable areas. More recently, in January 2026, the project expanded to include masonry water reservoirs along the pipeline and improvements to the source capture system using a grouted rock weir. These additions are designed to help store water during dry months, improve flow control, and make irrigation more reliable for farmers. The team also updated the Operations & Maintenance plan so the community can continue checking for leaks, clogs, cracks, and other maintenance needs over time.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teams - Peru - Where We’re Headed</image:title>
<image:caption>The Peru Team is now entering an exciting new phase. Our next step is Monitoring and Evaluation for the Carnichique project, where we will assess how well the reservoirs, pipeline, and source-capture improvements are performing. This includes gathering community feedback, checking system reliability, documenting lessons learned, and identifying any minor repairs or improvements needed. At the same time, for the year 2026-2027, the team is beginning to explore potential new project opportunities in nearby communities, with possible needs related to potable water, sanitation, solar electricity access, irrigation canals, and other community infrastructure. This is a great time for new members to join, because students will have the chance to help close out one meaningful project while also shaping the beginning of a brand-new partnership.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teams - Dominican Republic - Our Project</image:title>
<image:caption>The Princeton Engineers Without Borders USA Dominican Republic team worked to improve the potable water system in El Cajuil, a small farming community of 120 households located about a mile from Loma de Cabrera, in the Dajabon province of the Dominican Republic. The old water distribution system in the community of El Cajuil was built 30 years ago to support a population half its current size of approximately 600 people. Community members reported significantly varied distribution: some get constant water flow, while others report not receiving water for days on end. Our team has finished its project and has succeeded in bringing clean, reliable water flow to the people of El Cajuil. The project wrapped up in 2020, and the team has transitioned into the Ecuador project.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teams - Dominican Republic - The Team’s Finished Work</image:title>
<image:caption>We had three trips for assessment and implementation. In the summer of 2016, our team first travelled to El Cajuil to begin addressing the inefficiencies and pathogen levels in the water. In August 2017, our team assessed the site and determined that distribution inefficiencies and possible leaks are greatly reducing the delivery of water through an aging pipeline system. We installed new water meters throughout the system, and so had a better understanding of the system. We found several major leaks that caused El Cajuil to lose several thousands of gallons of water per day. In 2018, we made major modifications to the system by adding 1.8 km of new pipeline to loop the system and regulate water pressure, built a bridge for a pipeline river crossing, and added a filtration and chlorination system.</image:caption>
